After a hasty wedding, the pair sets off for the west knowing little about each other. Together they battle raging rivers, hostile Indians, sickness, treacherous mountain trails, and more. But as the seeds of love begin to grow, Jonathan’s jealousy and pride threaten to be an even greater danger than anything they find in the west. Seldom do I finish a book so fast! However, author Catherine Ulrich Brakefield's 'Wilted Dandelions' was such a compelling read that I had to know what would happen next. A lover of historical romance, and one whose books are founded upon history, I was blessed to find that this author and I both write to shed Messiah's light into the hearts of those who do not yet know him, and bless those who do with an enthralling novel. If you're looking for an ordinary Christian love story, this isn't it! I say that for within these pages the characters face the same moral issues each person faces. And to begin with they each handle them in a worldly way. Transformation's from sinner to saved are not easy to write about in a way that doesn't sound preachy. Yet, in this story, several come to know the Lord, not because they are seeking him, but because they see those who struggle mightily with their faith become whiter than snow!
I highly recommend this book and, since I'll be reading everything this gifted author has penned, hope you do likewise!

Wilted Dandelions Catherine Ulrich Brakefield 9781936501236 Books Reviews
Had the honor of reading an advanced copy of this book, provided by the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. However, I'm thrilled that I dearly loved this book. Catherine's writing delighted and surprised me because I haven't read any voice like her, and I found her style very refreshing. I especially loved the lyrical prose and vivid imagery, the realistic and enthralling setting, the feeling of being in the story right along with the characters who were very memorable to me. Catherine did a fantastic job making me care deeply about the characters and their journeys. I look forward to her next book.
Worth Reading Twice! I couldn't put the book down. I was truly impressed at the masterful job Catherine did in weaving the Living Word throughout the lives and conversations of her characters. She expertly depicts the close relationship the early missionaries must have had with God in order to successfully endure the trials and dangers they faced in bringing the Gospel of Jesus to the lost. Their love and willingness to share the gift of salvation at any cost, is evident as Catherine colorfully describes the challenges they encounter and determination they display. I'm looking forward to the sequel. I'm buying it for my and I've already given copies of the paperback to my daughter and daughter in laws!
This is one gripping, compelling read. Wilted Dandelions by Ms. Brakefield had me eagerly turning pages and sighing over the love story premise as well as taking comfort in the spiritual message. Her characters of Rachael and Jonathan were well rounded and had me seeing the story pan out before me as if a movie. I highly recommend this novel and look forward to reading more from this author.
This is a well-written adventure/romance. Two stubborn hearts must find a way to truly love, for love is not selfish or proud. They marry to fulfill their dreams, but each is afraid to love lest they be hurt. This novel is a page-turner, hard to put down. The characters are well developed. A very enjoyable read with spiritual depth.
Wilted Dandelions, by Catherine Ulrich Brakefield, is not just another historical Christian romance, but also an adventure. Rachael Rothburn, the daughter of a US senator in New York desires more than anything to take the good news of Jesus Christ to the Umatilla tribe of Oregon territory. Fired up by a revival meeting, all Rachael needs is a husband to be allowed to join the mission.
She is charmed by Dr. Jonathan Wheaton, but barely hopes he would marry her, let alone ever love her. To her surprise, he asks her father for her hand.
When these two stubborn people embark on a marriage of convenience and take a dangerous journey west, they must learn to rely on Jesus Christ and each other, but jealousies and doubts sometimes get in the way.
While Rachael and Jonathan are people of immense faith in Christ, they are also genuinely flawed characters, who make mistakes like any believer. The dangers they face along the trail, even threats of human trafficking, are plenty and realistic. They will keep you turning the pages to see how each situation resolves.
Wilted Dandelions is a story that exemplifies the importance of the Biblical values of trust, honesty, and sacrificial love in a marriage. You will cheer for Rachael and Jonathan to overcome their shortcomings and hope they will learn from their mistakes.
Brakefield paints a picture of westward travel in the 1830s with a rich, poetic palette of historical detail. The author’s equestrian knowledge shows through as she details the care of horses, their strength, and resiliency on this perilous journey.
If you’re looking for a well-written, high-tension Christian romance and adventure set against the backdrop of America’s Second Great Awakening, then this book is for you.
Determined, often naive, Rachael Rothburn wants to go west to share the gospel with the Umatilla Indians. Alas, declared a spinster at the ripe old age of 22, the mission board won't entertain her application because they only take married couples.
Dr. Jonathan Wheaton wants to make a name for himself and follow in his grandfather's footsteps. When he learns the pretty Senator's daughter yearns to become a missionary, he approaches her father with a marriage proposal.
Will two proud, insecure people survive the rigors of the trail and someday have a loving marriage?
The author is new to me, but I'd heard positive things about her stories. She did a good job making me care about the characters and grounding me in the setting.
