Major Milton Price DSC, MC & Two Bars spent over forty years of his life in the British Army, most of it in the vaunted 22nd Special Air Service where he set the standard for his generation in military skill, discipline and dedication. A master of the military arts, he’s participated in hostage rescue operations in downtown London and the steamy jungles of Sierra Leone, and direct action missions in the deserts of Iraq, Afghanistan and Oman. He’s fought his nation’s enemies on the streets of Northern Ireland, the jungles of Africa, and in the mountains of the Falklands. Now, as the patriarch for the Friends From Damascus, an elite counterterrorism team, he faces his greatest test of stamina, discipline and loyalty when he’s captured by extremists bent on retribution.
The Major Friends From Damascus Book 6 edition by Cliff Happy Literature Fiction eBooks
“The Major” by Cliff Happy is the 6th book in his Friends from Damascus series, and this one is - by far - the least good. Here, he extends what is a good basic though overly-wordy story by including several long, boring and essentially irrelevant flash-backs to recount the not-very-interesting military background of --- the Major. The intention of the flash-backs, some of which are 30-40 or more pages in length, is to give depth and important background to the crusty and mysterious tactical older leader of the Friends of Damascus group. This small, mysteriously-funded group is a rogue international hit squad, which takes it upon themselves to exterminate bad guys from the increasingly dangerous world of terrorists. The lengthy flash-backs were so annoying that I soon learned to just skip through them so as to not miss a beat of the main story. The basic story is quite good, classic Friends from Damascus stuff, even if the first quarter of the book is merely more detailed background on each and every one of the team. Mr. Happy has picked up author Daniel Silva’s habit (in his Israeli assassin Gabriel Allon series) of filling in the reader, increasingly so in each successive book, on the background, role and personality of each member of the team. Truly unnecessary.
This story goes beyond the pale in its graphic unpleasant forays into the inhumanity and torture techniques of the bad guys, thus lessening the literary value of the book, in my estimation.
There are two denouements, one at the Saudi Embassy in London where the major is being tortured, and another in the jungle of Africa where bad guys are developing an air-borne Ebola virus. Why 2? The first one is better. Both, however. require the reader to suspend disbelief page after page after page. At no point in this book does a reader become so wrapped up in the story to find it thrilling. The last 50 pages are quite slow, as we are introduced to the next new member of the team.
Considering the overly-long, tedious flashbacks, the fill-the-pages-with-background technique, the gratuitous bodily damage descriptions, and the ultra slow finale, this book is the weakest of the series to date, despite its current day relevance and its being well-written. On the whole, however, I can’t give it anything higher than a 2.49, thus reduced to a 2.

The Major Friends From Damascus Book 6 edition by Cliff Happy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Another page turner from Cliff Happy. The character of the unflappable, infallible Major is delved into and you will be surprised. The team pulls off the impossible again, but it may be getting to be too much for some of them.
This one starts with a raid in Africa. The raiders are SEAL Team six. The mission is to get a group of doctors out of the hands of the local militia. A milita funded by AQ.
Peter "Trip" Hamilton is a member of 6. He's the rock of the unit.
Trip's the first out of the chopper and he's always headed for the sound of the gunfire.
Trip isn't the leader by rank. In fact he's had disciplinary problems and been busted down quite a few times.
Neither medals, commendations or rank mean anyhing to Trip. He loves being part of SEAL team six. He loves what he does and he's one hell of an operator which is why he hasn't been booted for his disciplinary problems. Because he's so good at what he does he's become that rock they all depend on.
Once the team gets to the site they realize its empty. Obviously the militia had warning.
Upon inspection the team finds most of the huts are the usual.
There is, however, a cinderblock building. They think the building may have been used for bio experimentation.
They all know enough not to enter the building. They see whats outside the building and make note of all of it. They find both animal and human remains. Once they catalouge everything they all head to the LZ for exfil.
Only problem is they have ingested whatever was being worked on in that cinder block building and many of the team members come down with it. It turns out to be a form of Ebola. All of them with the exception of Trip will die.
Trip won't be unscated but he will be very much alive and ready to head back to his team.
Once Trip returns to HQ he finds out he can't get medical approval to return to his team. Trip is told medical will allow him to do anything but return to the teams. He's one pissed off US Navy SEAL. But he's a SEAL who knows he's powerless to change Medicals Opinion. His Commanding Officer can't even do it. He's a SEAL no more and pissed as hell about it.
The Major is visiting his son at his sons request. He should have know better. He did know better but decided he'd take the chance. Brett wanted to come with him but the Major said he's be okay. What a wrong decision that turns out to be.
He's kidnapped after inflicting injuries on his captors. His son is killed. He was a loose end. A loose end who betrayed his Father.
The kidnappers, mideastern one and all, take his cell phone. Of course the Major sent a signal out before it was disabled by the kidnappers. The signal told the other team members that he has been compromised. The rule is the others need to get to a place of safety. Of course none of them follow that rule. Every one of them meet up to go and find the Major.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has Brett Morgan, Talia, the rest of the team, a raid on the Saudi embassy in London, a group of Saudi's out for revenge, a form of Ebola that will be a weapon, torture, murder, rape, what turns out to be one tough raid on a site in Africa, the rescue of the two surviving doctors held hostage, the wounding of a team member, Bretts rethinking of his mission the dangers and the size of his team, Trip being recruited as the teams newest member and one helluva read and a team like no other.
Just super. Five Stars all the way.
This series keeps it vigor, a pleasant surprise. For new readers you may wish to read an earlier book to better understand this book. As a matter of fact, this series is so well written and such a great great read ,I recommend that you start at the beginning. Please excuse the spelling
I think that I have read all the books by Cliff Happy. The Major had some twists that I was not expecting. One tends to think of these characters as heroes, but they are not, they are presented as humans, with doubts and feelings and hopes. I really like the whole series. I am eagerly awaiting the next one. The Major has moments of suspense, when you do not know if one of your favorite characters is going to die or to survive.
Thank you
Fans of the Friends appreciate the yearly adventure but this one could have been so much more. The vignettes into the Major's past were necessary and built the story. However the prolonged immersion into Brett's angst ridden psyche could have been written in a page and a half rather than several chapters.
The Team is about action and intrigue and there was little of either in the first half of the book, only catch-up devices to speed the tale along. It would seem the author has lost focus and fallen out of love with his Friends and going through the motions for the sake of his fans?
Hopefully, the fires of inspiration will be rekindled and the Legend of the Friends from Damascus will continue, as this fictional team of over the top underdogs needs a champion.
