Roadtrip Discovering Weird and Wonderful Places edition by Shelba Oberto Children eBooks Reviews
From the point of view of a grandpa who wants his grandchildren to grow up knowing about this great country and loving it, I heartily recommend this book. Our grandchildren--ages 6-11--delighted in each colorful page, competed with each other to see who could remember the names of state birds and capitals, and tried to see if they could answer the questions for each region.
Conceptually, it is clear this book was designed by a teacher--a very good teacher with a sense of what kids like. The photographs, some professional, some personal, encourage kids to take out their own cameras and try to capture the places we visit.
If you, like me, want this next generation to treasure our country, buy them this book.
I purchased this book as a birthday gift for my eight year old grandson, He has visited me in Hawaii several times and has traveled his home state, Washington, with his parents. He was excited to get the book and just had to share it with class mates! I am afraid I have awakened a travel monster. This book is a wonderful eye-opener for youth. ( all ages included). It is not a highly polished sterile perfect publication. It has a homey presentation that appeals to the youthful wanderlust. I makes me want to grab a road map and motor on! Grandpa Dave
What an accomplishment this book is! Whether young or old, one cannot read through Oberto's book about traveling through all 50 states of the United States of America without coming away treasuring hundreds of unique places, absorbing the diversity of natural settings, and being overwhelmed by the creativity of ordinary citizens working to create and preserve both natural and human made works of art.
Hundreds of photographs tell the stories, photographs that are enhanced by information, statistics, and the voices of two delightful children who made this trip.
This book is a must-read for all grade-school age children in this country and their parents.
This fun-for-all-ages book is a road trip to all fifty states told through the eyes of a twelve-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy. Their comments and reactions make this travelogue personal so that middle-grade readers can relate. The travelogue is divided into sections of the United States. Each state includes comments from both kids as well as short bits of travelogue information, fun facts about each state, and excellent photos of many unusual and off-the-beaten-path attractions.
What are some attractions I now want to visit after reading Roadtrip?
• The Enchanted Woods garden in Winterthur, DE, is like a fairy tale. I want to see the Tulip Tree House and Faerie Cottage.
• Chincoteague Island, VA, has wild horses running on the beach.
• East Haddam, CT is home to Gillette Castle, owned by William Gillette (1853-1937), who played the original detective, Sherlock Holmes.
• The flying horse carousel in Westerly, RI, has twenty horses that are not attached to the floor. They hang from a center frame so they can swing out or “fly.”
• Scarborough, ME has Lenny, a life-sized chocolate moose weighing 1,700 pounds!
• Boston, MA, is home of the “Skinny House”—four stories high but only ten feet wide, and sandwiched in between two big apartment buildings.
What are some fun facts I learned that kids would also enjoy?
• Montpelier, VT, is the only state capital without a McDonald’s!
• Covered bridges can last for centuries, while uncovered bridges last only 10-15 years.
• The Connecticut state song is “Yankee Doodle.”
• Martin Luther King, Jr., made his “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, in 1963.
[NOTE This recommended review is based on the first thirty pages of the book, basically the northeast section of the United States.]
I first purchased my first copy at a readers book fair for myself, then four more copies at a craft show of ROADTRIP for my grandchildren. My wife and I have visited every state and thought it would be fun for our grandchildren to see where we have traveled in a fun way.
ROADTRIP is clearly a children's book. Kaylee and Jimmy invite you along on their adventure of a lifetime.
But as senior adults my wife and I enjoy reading and looking at the pictures in ROADTRIP ourselves. So I'm not sure who would enjoy the book the most. We have our copy in our motor-home book on a book shelf along with my favorite authors like Agatha Christie, Clive Cussler, Nelson DeMille. When someone enters our RV and see our book shelf, they always grab ROADTRIP first.
ROADTRIP Deserves a solid 5 Star Review
My wife have our fingers crossed that Author Shelba Oberto will write another book/with pictures about our great country.
I am getting ready to do a road trip with my family and wanted a book which my 9 year old could use as a guide and could spark her interest in the different states we would travel to. The book is very boring as well as the pictures. Pictures are all small photographs taken by a nonprofessional with a small camera and you can't see anything real interesting in them. At $23.95 this book is a rip-off. I only paid $16 but still feel ripped off because of the quality and content of this book. It really looks like something maybe a high school student typed up on a computer, pasted on some vacation photos and took to Office Depot to get copied. I will try to return this book.
If you're going on a road trip, order the books AAA has on each state or region. They are super informative and fun to read, have amazing photos of the places they recommend and they are FREE with your AAA roadside membership.
